As evidenced by the CG video below – which is much shorter than most cinematic trailers are – The Last Guardian centers around the tale of a young boy and his adventures with a gigantic hybrid creature name Trico. While the footage offers very little in the way in way of details about the gameplay mechanics of Team Ico’s long-awaited title, one can presume the story itself will be chock full of both tender beauty and heartfelt moments.

Coupled with the announcement of The Last Guardian’s newest trailer, the game’s creative director Fumito Ueda sat down with Sid Shuman, the director of SIEA Social Media, for a Q&A session about the game, revealing his inspirations behind the creation of Trico. According to Ueda, he drew on memories of his childhood to make Trico a reality, saying:
Even though Ueda was once worried that no one would remember the game due to The Last Guardian having spent an incredibly lengthy time in development – almost a decade, in fact – the director went on record to say that making Trico come to life was one of his proudest accomplishments during production. As a matter of fact, it seems as if Ueda wants fans to establish a realistic relationship with the creature in the game, as the director explains, “We were basically breathing life into a creature that has never been created, a new character, which is very difficult. How does it feel to actually feed Trico? I want players to experience what that feels like.”
“In creating Trico, I didn’t really have to do any specific research because it’s a creature that obviously doesn’t exist. But it’s really all based on my childhood memories, the way I interacted with the animals, the way they reacted to me.”
Perhaps most interestingly, though, is Ueda’s assertion that The Last Guardian exists within the same realm as Ico and Shadow of the Colossus. However, “anything further than that” is left up to players to figure out, with the director elaborating, “Everyone has a different level of relationship with the two previous titles, so we wouldn’t dictate that it is or it isn’t [in the same universe]. It’s up to the player.”
Despite the fact that The Last Guardian has suffered delay after delay since its initial announcement all those years ago, it won’t be much longer until gamers are finally able to see how Team Ico’s latest project holds up against its previous releases. With any luck, fans will be rewarded for their patience with an unforgettable title unlike any other and The Last Guardian will live up to its expectations as one of the most anticipated games of the holiday.
The Last Guardian is set to release on December 6, 2016 for PlayStation 4.
