Speaking of the end of the world, The Last of Us 2’s director, Neil Druckmann, recently discussed some inspiration for the sequel on a panel at DICE Summit 2018. Apparently the award-winning graphic novel turned Netflix original series, The End of the F***ing World has been in heavy rotation as the team works on the new game.

Druckmann explained that the series, which is about two teens on the run from their families, the law, and perhaps something even more sinister; has a style of dialogue that has really influenced work on The Last of Us 2.

“There’s a show on Netflix called The End of the F***ing World, which is so well written and acted and quirky, and has been totally inspiring for some of the stuff we’re doing in [The Last of Us 2]—more on the dialogue stuff.”

Although the series isn’t about the end of the world on the same scale that The Last of Us is, it is easy to see how the dark comedy’s dialogue could catch the attention of the Naughty Dog team. The blunt, savagely honest dialogue from both of the main characters makes it impossible not to care about them, even as they are making terrible mistakes. If that doesn’t sound like Naughty Dog, we’re not sure what does.

Details on the upcoming sequel are still very sparse, but it is exciting to hear the development team openly talking about the project in public settings. Hopefully by the time E3 2018 rolls around there will be a new trailer and maybe even a release date.

The Last of Us: Part 2 is currently in development for the PlayStation 4.
