Grounded Mode first appeared in an update to the original game, The Last of Us, which launched in 2013. The grueling new difficulty cranked everything up a few notches and really made the player think of their next actions throughout the experience. In the Grounded Mode, enemy damage was tripled, meaning any encounter could be a quick death for players.

The mode also removed the listen ability, which is how players survey an area and find where enemies are compared to their position. These two omissions alone make the game much more challenging but on top of it all, players will find fewer resources throughout the game, the HUD is disabled and there are fewer checkpoints.

In a new update for The Last of Us Part 2, a trophy list has been added to the game that all but confirms the brutal Grounded Mode is being added shortly. The update contained two trophies, one of which is called “Dig Two Graves” which requires players to complete the game on the Grounded difficulty.

The other trophy is titled “You Can’t Stop This” and it requires players to beat the story with any permadeath setting active. While the Grounded trophy is pretty straight forward, the second trophy doesn’t give us much information about the permadeath settings being added to the game. It seems that players can beat the game on a medium difficulty with permadeath activated and get the trophy all the same.

PlayStation 4 players who have a love for Platinum trophies should not worry as the two added trophies will not affect a current Platinum trophy nor will they be required to obtain for anyone looking to still get the Platinum trophy in The Last of Us Part 2. The two new trophies are being added in a different list of trophies, fittingly called Grounded Mode and they’ll remain separate from the launch trophy list.

Naughty Dog has yet to talk about the new trophies being added to The Last of Us Part 2 or if any other game modes and updates are being added to the game. So while players may remember pulling their hair out over the first game’s Grounded Mode, there’s a chance this new Grounded Mode may be different. Although, if the game modes are the game, The Last of Us Part 2 had some pretty difficult areas so players may be in for a challenge.

This is the first bit of DLC being added to The Last of Us Part 2 and fans are hoping it certainly won’t be the last. While the game is lengthy on its own, fans of the series are eager to get back into the world and continue the narrative with certain characters. The first game in the franchise received story DLC a year after it launched and fans of The Last of Us Part 2 are hoping for the same. While it might not be story DLC, the separate multiplayer mode for The Last of Us Part 2 seems to be well into development. There is no planned release date or official reveal of the game’s multiplayer mode currently.

The Last of Us 2 is available now for PS4.
