Naughty Dog’s newest title sparked plenty of controversy when it was first released last month, receiving both Metacritic review bombs as well as death threats from angry players. The game even fell victim to getting story details leaked ahead of the title’s release date. None of these factors seemed to hinder the game’s sales in any way however, as the title continues to sell incredibly well.

This news feels somewhat unsurprising, as players already learned earlier that The Last of Us Part 2 had broken multiple sales records, with it selling over 4 million copies after just its first three days on the market. In fact, in the UK the game managed to sell more copies than the other top 10 highest selling games for each week in June when all added together.
Naughty Dog has always done very well in terms of both critical reception and commercial sales, with 2013’s The Last of Us selling 3.4 million units within its first three weeks, breaking game sales records at the time. As of October 2019, the title has reportedly sold over 18 million units in total. The Uncharted franchise is no different, with the most recent main-line entry Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End selling over 15 million units.
Yes, Naughty Dog has always done incredibly well in terms of its game sales, but it seems like The Last of Us Part 2 has become the new standard for the company moving forward. While many players are very upset over the game’s story direction, its undeniable that the game oozes passion and creativity.
In a world where Call of Duty and Pokemon games are released annually with little changed in between installments, The Last of Us Part 2 is a game that takes real risks. And for every risk, there potentially lies an even greater award; sales show that Naughty Dog’s risks ultimately paid off for the company in the end. Releasing seven years after its predecessor, Part 2 took its time, with the development team carefully crafting a new game that felt unique and different from the original.
The Last of Us Part 2 is available now exclusively for the PlayStation 4.
