In 2013, Baker’s performance as Joel in The Last of Us won universal praise. The voice actor’s portrayal of a flawed, but sympathetic character has endured over the years. As the next game neared its original release date, invested players have been debating what role Joel would take in the sequel, and what kind of story arc he might undergo. Speaking to Fandom, Baker teased fans with some insights.

According to Baker, The Last of Us 2 will reveal more details and layers to Joel’s character. Baker said that the sequel had taught him more about the character than what he knew during the original game’s production. He then went into detail about how series’ creator Neil Druckmann left him speechless after explaining the sequel’s storyline, and told fans that they should go into the game with an “open mind” and without their expectations of what the game should be. The voice actor believes that the story will make players “question everything” about the game’s world and its characters.
While Baker’s statements appear to be good signs for the sequel’s narrative quality, the renowned voice actor did not shed any light into what The Last of Us 2’s gameplay will look like. The Fandom interview notes that there was no information on whether or not Joel will be a playable character, but the interview seems to indicate that Joel will play a pivotal role.
To make the additional delay a little easier, Naughty Dog is offering screenshots from The Last of Us 2 to fans who have settled in for another long wait. Hopefully, if the game’s final release date is further away than expected, the developer will continue to build excitement for the game with more information.
The Last of Us 2 is in development for PS4.
