During a discussion with IGN, Fujibayashi talked about how he is already thinking about what’s coming around the bend following the launch of all that The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild has offered so far. To be more specific, the director explained, “I can’t say at this point if it will be in sequels or in continuations, or what form it will take, but I definitely have lots of ideas and lots of motivation right now,” which indicates potential fuel for a direct sequel is being refined.

As far as Fujibayashi’s overall motivation to make fresh creations for The Legend of Zelda franchise is concerned, though, the director’s qualification of him not knowing how the new ideas will be used shouldn’t be interpreted as Breath of the Wild’s followup already being in development. Instead, it simply shows an insight into Fujibayashi’s creative process, as it seems as if the successful introduction of the first two DLC packs for BotW serves as a positive inspiration for him to deliver more quality content. As a matter of fact, the director said that the process of making the expansions while getting feedback from colleagues and fans helped coax out more gameplay ideas.

All things considered, the prospect of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild’s director already conjuring up new ideas for the Switch title and the series as a whole should come as exciting news to the franchise’s fans. Hidemaro Fujibayashi has previously divulged that BotW almost added a Spider-Man styled travel system with the use of Link’s hookshot, so it will definitely be interesting to learn what other unique ideas and features could get implemented down the line.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is available now for the Nintendo Switch and Wii U.
