Speaking to Edge magazine in the February 2020 issue (issue 341), Daedalic Entertainment revealed that The Lord of the Rings: Gollum would be released in 2021 for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X. Daedalic Entertainment CEO Carsten Fichtelmann said that the PS5 “will be huge” and that “Microsoft is doing some things better than they did in the past.” Fichtelmann didn’t say when in 2021 the development team is aiming for.

Fichtelmann also revealed why The Lord of the Rings: Gollum development team is so excited to make a game for the new consoles. The faster memory of the PS5 and the Xbox Series X is “a dream come true” for the developers because they “have to concern ourselves with streaming corridors any more.” It can be “really painful” when developers have to “squeeze down these otherwise beautiful, stunning environments because we need another corridor here,” said Fichtelmann.
That isn’t all that Fichtelmann revealed while talking to Edge as it was also confirmed that The Lord of the Rings: Gollum’s version of Gollum won’t be like the films. Fichtelmann said that the team doesn’t “want to displease the folks who have only seen the movies. But in short, he doesn’t look like Andy Serkis.” For many fans, Andy Serkis’ performance as Gollum and the way that the character looks is one reason why the character is so entertaining and so Daedalic will have to really try to get them to like its version.
The game will have stealth gameplay too, Fichtelmann, which seems to confirm that the game won’t be all pinballing around a battlefield. The stealth gameplay of Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor and Middle-earth: Shadow of War were praised in a big way in reviews and several critics also compared the gameplay to the Assassin’s Creed and Batman: Arkham series. The Lord of the Rings: Gollum’s dual personality gameplay as players choose between Smeagol and Gollum could also make the game feel like Shadow of Mordor. Those games did very well however and fans will complain, but many will also be hoping that Daedalic can do something really new and exciting with the PS5 and Xbox Series X.
The Lord of the Rings: Gollum will be released in 2021 on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X.
