The Mandalorian, which made it to the top of the streaming lists last year, is nominated in its category against Netflix’s The Crown, Ozark, and Ratched as well as HBO Max’s Lovecraft Country. This is an obvious win for the streaming services, as the drama category was completely dominated by them. The Best Television Series - Musical or Comedy category was also dominated by streaming services, with only CBC’s Schitt’s Creek representing for broadcast networks.

As Disney Plus expands its television catalog, especially with the highly-anticipated MCU series’ coming out this year, it’s likely that they could make even more of a dent in awards season next year. With streaming services getting more nominations at awards shows every year, the trend seems to show that they could eventually shut out classic studios as a whole and traditional film enthusiasts are not happy about this.
With the long-term effects of the current COVID-19 pandemic on Hollywood unknown, this year could have been the chance streaming services needed to close the gap and create a new normal for the industry. Though there clearly is a shift, it’s obviously too early to tell what exactly that shift will look like.
Both seasons of The Mandalorian are currently streaming on Disney Plus and the 78th Annual Golden Globes will air on February 28.
