When Reddit user “J_Scarp1273” saw a recent episode of Disney Plus’ current hot offering in the Marvel universe, they apparently took inspiration from surprise standout character Baron Zemo’s ’techno-riffic’ dance moves, like so many others. But rather than simply pointing out Zemo’s amusing steps and moving on, this particular fan decided to turn the scene into something a little more special.

During the scene, Sam and Bucky (the titular Falcon and the Winter Soldier, respectively) entered a dance club to see Zemo (played by Daniel Brühl) just vibing his cares away among a sea of fellow gyrating nightlife enthusiasts. The shot of Zemo himself shaking his thing (in this case meaning his hand) is barely a couple of seconds long, and yet it was long enough for “J_Scarp1273” to loop and set to Haddaway’s intensely catchy 1993 jam “What Is Love?”

Fans of Saturday Night Live’s star-studded skits, as well as people who simply existed in the ’90s, are likely already intimately familiar with “What Is Love?” thanks to the 1996 “Night at the Roxbury” sketch from the aforementioned show featuring Chris Katan, Will Ferrell, and guest host Jim Carrey. While the Reddit post of a dancing Zemo doesn’t necessarily get in the viewers’ faces with any overt references, the image of a thumping nightclub set to the familiar tones of that song is almost universal at this point.
Zemo’s nifty moves became a meme literally overnight, and various iterations of it have seen the radical Baron cutting a rug to everyone from Huey Lewis to One Direction and even the Golden Girls theme song (minus its lackluster spin-off), along with everything in between. It’s amusing to watch, and it’s almost enough to make viewers forget that he’s a convicted terrorist who bombed the United Nations building, killing Wakanda’s King T’Chaka along with many others.
It’s a funny meme on the surface, and certainly harmless for people to enjoy. But hopefully Marvel doesn’t play too far into it, and eventually circles back to the inevitable conclusion that Zemo will definitely turn against his current allies of convenience. But until then, shake it, Baron Zemo!
The Falcon and the Winter Soldier is now available on Disney Plus.
