That being said, not all demon hunters in anime are masters of their craft. The fact of the matter is that some of these hunters are weak, goody, ineffective, or a combination of all three. This leads to a situation where demons can easily get the upper hand, and the following characters are perfect examples of such incompetent demon hunters.

Kokichi Muta (Jujutsu Kaisen)

It’s not his fault that Kokichi is one of the least effective demon hunters in Jujutsu Kaisen. Cursed with a weak body, Kokichi finds it close to impossible to even move around, which forces him to stay behind and just used his Cursed Energy to control puppets instead.

That’s not to say that he can’t bring the fight to anyone when required, with Mechamaru having more than enough tools in its arsenal to take care of most threats. However, given how powerful some of the major curses are in Jujutsu Kaisen, it’s only a matter of time when Kokichi doesn’t end up being all that effective in combat.

Zenitsu Agatsuma (Demon Slayer)

Most people would be incensed if they saw Zenitsu on this list. After all, this demon slayer might seem rather pathetic at first glance but ends up tapping into a massive reserve of power when required. This lets him use one extremely powerful move that he has perfected to a T that can be used to decimate enemies time and time again.

However, the fact that Zenitsu can only access this state when unconscious definitely makes him a liability, at times. This, coupled with his insistence on only using a single move all the time, makes him a one-trick pony… albeit a very powerful one.

Kazuma Kuwabara (Yu Yu Hakusho)

Yu Yu Hakusho is one of the best and most legendary shonen anime around, penned by the same author who later went on to pen Hunter X Hunter. The show is a simple yet riveting look into the life of a high school teenager whose life changes after he dies and gets sent back to life as a Spirit Detective.

However, Yusuke isn’t the only high school student who gets supernatural powers. Kuwabara manages to get some great powers of his own as well, but the fact that he’s somewhat of a dunce does hurt his overall effectiveness in combat. While he does have his moments to shine, they are few and far between, with the other members of the group outclassing him in both talent and power.

Priscilla (Claymore)

Priscilla was such an incompetent demon hunter that she ended up transforming into the very thing she was sworn to destroy. This Awakening of hers was caused when Teresa humbled this upstart in combat, injuring her pride. This, in turn, led to Priscilla shedding her humanity in a bid to kill the person who insulted and humiliated her.

There’s no denying that Priscilla is a pretty riveting antagonist in her own right, with her power levels shooting through the roof after this awakening. However, when one looks at her from the content of a Claymore who is meant to hunt demons, she definitely failed at her job.

Shinjuro Rengoku (Demon Slayer)

After seeing the lengths that Kyojuro Rengoku would go to so that the young people under his wing wouldn’t suffer the wrath of Akaza’s might, the Flame Hashira put it all on the line in one of the anime’s best fights. However, this wasn’t enough to take down Akaza, who punched a hole through Kyojuro and pretty much cemented his demise.

So, when viewers had the opportunity to see what Rengoku’s father was like, their expectations were through the roof; that is until Shinjuro showed just how much of a pathetic shell he was of his former self. It was painful to see just how callous Shinjuro was about his son’s death, even going so far as to belittle him. While he did end up revealing the grief he actually felt further down the line, most people still don’t consider this act enough to excuse the insults he threw out earlier.

Mai Zenin (Jujutsu Kaisen)

Just like Kokichi, Mai is another Jujutsu Sorcerer who is weak because of a lack of natural skills. There’s no denying that her will to become a powerful sorcerer is definitely there, but not having the ability to harness her cursed energy properly has led to her forming a solitary technique that is extremely impractical as well.

It doesn’t help that Mai is constantly trying to compare herself to Maki instead of trying to get better for her own sake. This really hurts her effectiveness as a Jujutsu Sorcerer, and trying to hunt curses down with her is bound to be a chore.
